G7 Brings New Deals

Leaders from the G7 countries are meeting in Alberta, Canada, to discuss issues such as tariffs and the Middle East conflict.

U.S. President Trump met Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to negotiate border taxes, aiming to align their differing tariff plans before Trumpโ€™s July tariff pause deadline. They have launched a 30-day countdown to negotiate a new cross-border agreement.

Trump told WSJ, โ€œWe have a tariff concept, Mark has a different concept.โ€

The EU reportedly considered a 10% U.S. tariff rate but later denied it, leaving France, Germany, and Italy to explore alternatives. Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer finalized a trade deal framework with Trump, building on last monthโ€™s agreement.

Reports say that Trump is leaving the meeting early, but other leaders will continue discussions.

Elsewhere, gold futures were down 1.4% at $3,405 an ounce.

Also, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which affects borrowing costs on a wide range of loans, notably mortgages, rose to 4.45% today from 4.42% at Friday's close.

Markets Do Not Care About the War

Global stock markets remained positive on June 16, 2025, despite ongoing Israel-Iran conflict, which has now entered its fifth day.

Strategists warn investors may be underpricing risks, especially in energy markets.

David Roche of Quantum Strategy predicts a prolonged conflict, unlike Israelโ€™s typical swift strikes.

Russ Mould of AJ Bell highlighted potential energy market disruptions, while Verisk Maplecroftโ€™s Torbjorn Soltvedt called it an โ€œopen-ended warโ€ with significant implications.

Brent crude futures rose to $73.75 per barrel, but remain below 2022 peaks.

Deutsche Bankโ€™s Jim Reid noted a milder market reaction unless escalation occurs, with the S&P 500 typically recovering from geopolitical shocks within weeks. BNP Paribasโ€™ Philippe Gijsels sees limited escalation risks but warns of market disappointment if tensions rise.

A lot, however, also depends on the U.S. If it enters the war, the market may take a fall.

Just in: Trump Organization announces mobile plan, $499 smartphone. Also, OpenAI wins $200 million U.S. defense contract.

On the other hand, Roku shares jumped more than 10% following the announcement of an exclusive partnership with Amazon Ads, giving advertisers access to 80 million U.S. connected TV households through Amazon's demand-side platform (DSP). Itโ€™s big: Reddit has launched AI-powered advertising toolsโ€”Reddit Insights and Conversation Summary Add-onsโ€”to help brands track trends and enhance engagement by highlighting positive user comments.

Alibaba introduced its Qwen3 AI models, optimized for Appleโ€™s MLX architecture, bringing advanced AI capabilities to iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

Up and down: AMD jumped about +10% intraday to a six-month high thanks to new targets as analysts are more optimistic about its future. On the other hand, CoreWeave got downgraded despite a higher price target.

WhatsApp gets ads: Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg plans to turn WhatsApp into a major revenue source by introducing ads, a shift from its ad-free past. The company has plans to monetize the โ€˜Updatesโ€™ section that was launched a year ago, and now attracts 1.5 billion daily users.

The "Chats" tabโ€”where users exchange messagesโ€”will continue to be end-to-end encrypted and will not be used for advertising.

Meta will also monetize WhatsAppโ€™s Channels with search ads and subscriptions. There are plans to introduce a subscription based model, i.e.: allowing channel admins to offer users exclusive content for a monthly fee.ย

Channels will remain free for WhatsApp users. However, channel admins will have an option to set a monthly fee within a range if they opt to utilize the subscription model. WhatsApp will roll out the new features to a global audience over the next few months.

The news sent the stock about 3% higher.
